What does lbs test mean for fishing line?

Caught on 10 lbs braid.

Lbs test

Lbs. (pounds) refers to the breaking strength of the line. A line rated 6 lbs should not break until 6 pounds of pressure is on the line. Similarly, a line rated 20 lbs should not break until 20 pounds of pressure.

Using a knot can reduce the strength of the line. Certain knots are stronger than others.

Using 6 lbs test line, you can catch bigger fish than 6 pounds. You do this by setting the drag on your reel. When the drag is set, you can still pull line out without breaking the line. A big fish will get worn out from pulling on your drag, and the rod will help you tire out the fish. You have to take your time and not force your fish in.

The world record for Black Marlin on 6 lbs test line is 735 lbs 3 oz.

As Preston stated:

Pound test does not mean a 10lb test can pull in fish that are 10 lbs, #test simply means the line at its weakest point should be able to withstand 10 lbs of pressure on the line at its weakest point (This does not include cuts or nicks in your lines that you get from abrasions off rocks and such while fishing).

Always use your drag and have it set anywhere from 15% to 30% of your line’s max # setting or the rod’s max # rating - whichever is lower.

Setting the drag accurately depends on what you’re fishing for; I believe anywhere from 1-3lbs of drag is good for most bass fishing. Also, after every trip, loosen your drag all the way off and this will help prolong the life of your reel’s drag system and maybe even your reel in general.

Setting the Drag

Attach a fishing scale to your line and pull line off your reel with the drag on. Fish scales have a hook that attaches to the fish. Place your line on the scale hook and set your drag. A 10 lbs line at 30 percent ( 10 x .30 = 3 ) it should take 3 lbs of tension to pull line off the reel. Adjust the drag until you get 3 lbs of tension.

Drag is used to wear down a big fish. Too tight of a drag will break your line. Too loose of a drag and a fish could take all your line.

A 10 lbs test line means that the line will take 10 lbs of tension before breaking. To avoid the line breaking under tension, drag would be set about 3 lbs of tension.

  • Vale: What line is usually used for a braided line, or does it vary?
