hello guest, the johnson model 80 was used in much the same fashion as the johnson century 100 that followed. it can be used on both a casting rod or a spinning rod. the spool is reversible. i have used mine both ways, it takes some practice getting used to casting one. i spent more time practicing with mine out in the driveway than i have fishing with it. they work well and are well built...

Timmy, the 80 should work just like the preceding sidewinder models, true/false?

Al, yes they are but i believe the 80 was the first model sidewinder that could be used either right or left handed. flip over the spool and mount it on the rod with the handle on which ever side you want. that is why i compared it to the model 100.
