Trout fishing in Southern Vermont

My wife and I will be in Putney, VT Wed. 9/19/07 - Sat. 9/22/07. This will be my first trip to VT and I hope to do some stream fishing for trout. I'm from NC where we have had record heat and drought. Looking forward to some cooler temps. and fall colors.

Any advice on the current conditions, recommended fly patterns, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I can't afford a guide, I'm going to have to "wing it".
