So I grew up only using spinning reels because that's what my dad taught me. But now I'm curious about baitcasting. I see all the pros using them so I'm guessing there has to be something to it. Anyone I've known who has tried them has just given up because they said they would backlash so bad.

So my questions are, what are the benefits of baitcasting. What applications do they outpeform spinning? And why should I consider giving baitcasting a shot.

By the way I primarily fish for Largemouth Bass in Southern California.

Thanks,
Brian

A baitcaster has a 'free spool' which uses the weight of the lure to spin and cast the line out in a very speedy manner. It is good for increasing casting distance and pinpoint accuracy - but indeed, it needs getting used to. If not giving up you will find it fun using it.

I find that baitcasting also works a little better for heavier applications. When I'm after stuff like stripers, muskies, gar, etc., I lean toward baitcasting, and most of my heavier bass fishing and all of my saltwater fishing is with baitcasting. Yes, backlashes are annoying, but you'll learn with time how to avoid them. I haven't had one in 9 years.
