Hi Danube,

I have just now submitted a picture of me and mine at an infamous creek in the USA. I did it as a test to see if I can successfully send a picture. If you don't get a picture of three people standing in front of a muddy creek full of pilings, then please let me know and (ideally ) please re-send instructons as to how to transmit a picture. If you DO get it, then again please let me know and I'll send a post describing the circumstances of the picture !
Cheers,
Marlin.

Marlin, it seems the photo you tried to send has been turned into a word document (at least that's what it says when tries to open the link attached to the file).

Are you sure you were using a jpg format?

As it happens, compadre, I asked " 'er Indoors" to do it for me, so I'm not sure quite how she did it, although I know that she intended to follow this website's instructions for submitting a picture. We will have another go. A week or so you kidnly gave me a brief note here in this forum as to how to transmit a picture. For the life of me I cannot find it. Could you re=send, please ?
Cheers,
Marlin

"er Indoors"? Who is she? I don't think I had to pleasure of her acquaintance?

Anyway, it's quite easy,

you click on 'browse' underneat the text box you type your posting in, and that will take you to your photos - then you click on the photo you want to post here twice and after you see the link appear you click on 'submit'-

the only thing is, please stick to the 500 pixels or less size because larger photos might create a problem while trying to attach them

Thanks, amigo for your kind help again. Now I ( or "'er Indoors" *** ) will have another go to send some pics.
You haven;t had the pleasure of " 'er Indoors" ? Well, you must be the only guy in the Western Hemisphere that hasn't , since is a bit of a "wild child".....that's why I love her so much. She is, compadre, my wife of twelve years standing ( well, actually, she has spent most of it laying on her back - another reason why I love her so much !!! )and I'll send you a picture of me in my top hat and tails as per Ascot races last week- she will probably feature in one of 'em, even if only as the hand that is stopping my glass from shaking whilst I pose for the pic.
Cheers,
Marlin.

My dear friend Marlin, this is the time I think it's appropriate to tell you that you must have missed my profile-page where it can be seen that I'm an 'amiga' and not an 'amigo'

It seems your 'er Indoors' plays a crucial role - whether it's in leading you to the U.S. of A. or holding your hand from shaking... I bet you must be proud of her

Oops ! That has put the cat amongst the budgerigars!
Well, what the Heck, there is no reason as to why I should not continue to send suitably modified messages to your splendid website, and, just as soon as I can get the Missus to master ( that's a tad ironic for you, ain't it, my dear ) the sending of photos in, then I shall also send some suitably fishing oriented posts.
I look especially to being able to get the on on "Shark Creek" since it is a matter close to my heart and one that cause me to spend much of each year in New Jersey - a beautiful and much under rated State. Ta Ta, for now.

Hi Danube,

We have decided to try and send a different picture since we had no luck with the Shark Creek one. If this is successful we shall submit the Shark Creek pic. again........and maybe others ! If you get this one you can put it in the box of "my image" . I shall also describe the circumstances of the picture, which was taken in Bar Harbour, Maine.
Cheers,
Marlin

"The Missus to master" is grand I really liked that one!

Marlin my dear friend, the picture you (or the 'missus' are trying to post is no picture Everything that has an extention to the filename saying .doc = a document and no photo.

To post photos you just click underneath the text box your typing your response in on "browse" - this will take you to your files out of which you can chose the photo you want to attach. Double-click on the photo you want to attach and a link will appear near the 'browse' box underneath your textbox. Simply click 'send' and it will appear. That is: if the photo is not larger than 500 pixels. If that is the case you will have to resize the photo before sending it, in order to adhere to the size-conditions. (which, as I wrote is 500 pixels).

I'm very curious to hear (and see) Shark Creek....

Danube, if only everyone were as patient as you ! The Missus and I will have another go soon at sending some pics. We think that we are getting on top of it now !
"Shark Creek" ( a narrow, brackish and muddy river in New Jersey ), has dominated my life for the last 20 years.Indeed, there was a time when it occupied nearly almost my every waking moment ! Having had two members of my family involved in horrible shark attacks ( Aden in 1933 and S.Africa in 1959),I have been fixated by this insignifant waterway since I first learned about it in 1987. I have even dragged my family to see it several times and, indeed, the first time we went in the Summer of 2001 it was such a hot day,( the hottest day ever recorded in NYC ) that our New York pals refused to get out of the air conditioned SUV, but sang "Mad Dogs and Englishmen Go Out in the Noon Day Sun ! " as us barve Brits. strode away down towards murky waters of the creek !
When I get the picture to you, I shall tell you more ; in the meantime just let me say that books have been written about it, TV documentaries made on it, and feature films, too !
Ciao,
Marlin

Hi Danube,

We think we have cracked just how to get a picture to you, so here is one. If it arives alright, then I'll send more. This one was taken at the house we rented in Bar Harbor, Maine three years ago. As you can see, a glass of bourbon and a fine cigar loom large in the pic ! Please put it in the image box for me.
Cheers,
Marlin.

Unfortunately I don't see a photo. Where did you place it, Marlin? I'm so curious...

Oh, bloody Hell - you still dont' have a photograph !
I will have to get Turid, my next door neighbour on the job, she is german and a first class IT techie, so if she can't get a damn picture sent, then nobody can.
You are entitled to be sceptical about my family's shark attacks, and rightly so since I was not entirely correct when I said that. The first attack in 1933 involved a man who, until he died, I always called my Uncle; in fact he was my Godfather, which isn't really family, is it ? He was, though, a very famous man who has written many books, film scripts and other literature. He was also Ava Gardner's lover for some years (have you heard of her ). It was through him that I "inherited" many thing - my service in the British Army, my love for America, and my enthusiasm for writing. I expect that he ( along with my Pop ! ) also gave me my love for the finer things in life, like expensive cigars and single malts.
Cheers,
Marlin

Yes, of course I heard of Ava Gardner. She was a great movie-star. Hahahaa.. now you got me wondering who your Godfather might have been Btw: I was not sceptical about the shark attacks, but just surprised it happened twice while it is, as far as I know, not a very 'common' 'accident' to have...

I wrote about placing photos on the other thread as you will read. Maybe it's easier to confine to that thread for solving the photo-problem

Ava Gardner wasn't the only one of his conquests, so was Shelley Winters, have you heard of her ? The were so many others, too, that I only single Shelley out for mention because she, along with Uncle John**, became my God parent. It was a bit of a problem at the time because she is Jewish and I am not not, so I don't think that the Rabbi was too pleased about, but that was so many years ago ( and I was so young at the time ! ) that I really don't recall much about it ! Incidentally, my "Uncle" was John Masters ( amongst other books he wrote the screenpaly for "Bhowani Junction" What thread do you want to loimit the photo problem discussion to ?

Is it worth establishing a thread titled just "Photos" ?
It is very frustrating attempting to submit pics. unsuccessfully, and I am sure that you would like to confirm that the facility of the Forum being able to receive pictures is still working. Right now I have several pictures that I think you may be interested in and some of them even have fish in them ! I also have now received from the US a picture of my chums the Blackfoot Indian rugby team !

Yes, Shelly Winters is also a known movie-star for me. Seen lots of her movies actually But Ava Gardner was more 'mysterious'.

Marlin, I'll open an how-to-place-photos-thread

Darn, I'm soooo curious

I have never really thought of it, but my life has been a pretty interesting one - and you haven't heard the half of it ! Writing these emails to you has made me aware of that. Goddamn, when you think that I have already sold the screenplay of a book that I am writing about my father - and he had a very much LESS interesting life than mine - maybe I should scrap his and do mine instead !

Have you checked out John Masters' life on any website ? I bet that he'll be in Wikipedia for example. One thing that is generally kept quiet , though, is the fact that when fighting the Japs in Burma, his unit was being supplied with food and ammo by American aircraft. One of these plane dropped a big sack of pineapples, but forgot to attach a parachute to it. When the sack hit the ground it burst open and flying pineapples went shooting everywhere through the air. Uncle John was hit by one of these and never really recovered from it. He sure as Hell went right off pineapples from that day forward ! It clearly affected him and after the war he changed his lifestyle dramatically and went and bought a ranch in Montana, USA. This is when he fell in with all the Hollywood types and started affairs with many of them.

I hope that you can get the photo situation sorted. The pics. I have here for you are backing up bigtime !
Cheers,
Marlin

Yes! How did you know, Marlin I did check out Wikipedia as a matter of fact. Interesting 'inside story' you got about him there. I would start disliking pineapples as well for such a reason He was very fortunate tho, because having affairs with Hollywood stars was (and is?) a dream of many, many people - and he just did it

You could simultaneously start a book about your life as well, no?

Of course, for many reasons, "Uncle" John kept very quiet about his "affaires", in fact I am not even sure if, apart from fiction and screenplays, he wrote any more books after he moved to the USA. I certainly don't thinthat he added any more to the two or three books that comprised his biography. As to my life, well I am still to young to start that ! Let me tell you another story, but this time it is about my Dad. Have you heard of Trevor Howard ? Well, apart from being a great movie star, he was also a very serious drinker. He and my Pop were great buddies from the time of WW2. Howard was especially fond of an English bottled beer called "Worthington White Label". This is an organic beer that has to looked after by not shaking it, keeping it at the correct temperature, pouring it properly etc. In every one of Howard's film contracts he had the clause that he must have at any one time no less than ten crates of this beer immediatley to hand and that he must also have my Dad as the designated keeper of the beer charged with the reponsibility of keeping it in good condition. This meant that these two guys travelled on location all around the World. Oh, bugger it, I have just had someone ring the doorbell, so I have to go !
The story carries on to include these guys and William Holden and Sophia Loren, so don't let me forget to tell you the rest !
Cheers,
Marlin

Now there's a very famous lady: Sophia Loren

You'd be fascinated by the Sophia Loren story !!! Unfortunately I have to go out right now and visit my tailors to get measured for a new suit. My wife has taken the day off to come with me. We are then going to a smart London restaurant for lunch. Please remind me and I'll tell you the rest of the story about Bill Holden, Trevor Howard ( if you don't know them, check them out on www.imdb.com) , Sophia Loren and my Dad !

Hi,
We have had a lovely day in London - our lunch was fabulous !
Here is the rest of that story about the famous Italian film actress I referred to earlier. In the late 1960's Trevor Howard, William Holden and she were making a movie in England called "The Key". As per normal, my Pop was on location with Trevor looking after his beer !
All the actors were lusting after SL and none more so than the handsome Bill Holden. This was causing a big problem for the director, so he asked my Pop to act as a chaperone. Well, my Dad is only human, and also was the image of the dashing ex Royal Navy officer and English gentleman, so he and SL got it on bigtime !!! This was the cause of my folk's getting dovorced ! I was never sure about this until some little while later when Trevor Howard and my Dad drove down to see my brother and I at boarding school one Summer Sunday. Trevor had just bought a new Rolls-Royce the previous day, so we were all surprised to see him looking so gloomy. "Come on, Trevor", said my Dad, "Why are you looking so fed-up. You have a great film career, a wonderful house, a gorgeous wife and a beutiful car !- why so glum ? ". "Yeah" replied Trevor,
"but I didn't get to f--k Sophia Loren !"
All of this is mentioned in Bill Holden's book where states that "some Goddamn Limey got what we were all after !"
Cheers,
Marlin

Ohmy There are sure some things money can't buy, is what I read in your story

Now, I find it always terrible when couples break up and especially if that happens because one of them were 'unfaithful' - but ( ) SL is quite a temptation to withstand I -with an unprofessional, because women's, eye- can tell

Btw: I just love SL - her movies, her interviews - her looks... She is a very impressive woman.

Thanks for sharing that with me, Marlin.
