As far as I am concerned, they're both a joy to cast and fish and the only difference to me is the SP is no longer made and the SLT is.

The older, now discontinued, SP is a little softer/slower than the new SLT.

The SP would be good for short to medium distances and great with extremely light (6x-7x) tippet.

The SLT would be better in the wind and for distance. It would make a better all around trout rod because of the better casting performance.

Just my opinion but the SP was the first fast action rod which flexed below the tip when casting. (And one of the first Sages which actually matched the wf line weight). They had the SP series very fast rods but they did not stay on the market long. Then when they released the XP series which is markedly faster. So they had the LL series of medium rods and the XP fast with the SP's in the middle so folks just kind of associated them with slower rods. I like the SP series but never considered them slow myself.

A related question: has anyone had the chance to try the 7 or 8wt SLT?
There is no 'I' in 'team.'
