Over 50% of the large landlocked salmon, rainbow trout and splake that I catch in my home lake have rubber worms in their stomachs. A few years back many camp owners were upset when the State created a boat launch to open the lake to other people. Then a large rock suddenly appeared to block the use of the launch. The rock was moved back and forth several times. Anyway, lots of angry people. I mention this because I am wondering if it is possible to kill fish by feeding them rubber worms??? Crazy thought...but these worms don't appear to have ever been on a hook. I mean you have to be a pretty poor fisherman to lose so many rubber worms...and a pretty good fisherman to hook so many fish

Hahahahaa perhaps they fell out of their hands I don't think fish can die from rubber worms. But I am not a professional.

I'm sure that I would have the same reaction, but I'm not lying here. These large fish have 5 to 6" rubber worms in their stomachs..not the new biodegradeable kind, but the old type...no scent, no flashy flakes, etc. These worms have obviously been in the fishs' stomachs for a long time. Their diameter has increased by 25% some times. They are usually folded over and blocking the passage of the stomach contents into the intestine. This winter is the first time I have actually seen a hook. I caught a large splake that had what I used to use to troll for walleye (a small spoon with several small colorful beads) sticking out of the fish's anus. The hook was still in the fishes stomach!! The hook was in a rubber worm that had been wrapped in the middle portion with electrical tape. The hook was through the tape. I haven't lived here that long so the sabotage theory is from a long time owner on the lake. Personally, I think that it is people leaving poles out 24/7 off their docks in rod holders. Another person said it was a bass fisherman.
I have even tried to use rubber worms...figured what the heck....they must be one helluva bait!!! All I ever catch are bass. So tell me...how do you catch trout and salmon with rubber worms????

Ah, that sure is a strange thing, bestrainbowst1 I could only guess, just like you... But the theory of having rods out 24/7 seems the more logical explanation to me. Have you seen those rods out?

Btw, you are not the only one observing this, it seems, now that I have done some investigation in the matter. Please read the following:

That was interesting info concerning the brookies in Maine. I can tell it is a problem here also. I catch large fish and all they have in their stomachs are sunfish, perch, and bass fry along with a large rubber worm. Those without the rubber worm have much larger sunfish or perch in their stomachs and are much healthier looking fish. I just learned that some of my trout photos are likely to be published in a major magazine.

Anyone wishing to see my photos can view them at my website. Also, several are featured in Adirondack Life's "2008 Guide to the Great Outdoors" which is on the magazine racks right now. I just want to thank all who have taken the time to write expressing their appreciation. It makes it all worthwhile.

Have you ever heard of someone chumming with your rubber worms? Are they scented?
