Orange Beach King Mackerel showing up along the Gulf Shores of Alabama.
Those of you who fish the Alabama gulf coast know about our King Mackerel fishery. The King Mackerel usually start showing up off Orange Beach and the Gulf Shores of Alabama when the water surface temperature hits 72 degrees. We have been eagerly awaiting the Kings arrival. The Red Snapper are plentiful but the federal season does not open until June 1. We have found ourselves looking for some larger fish to catch on our four and six hour trips. The King is certainly a staple fish for us in the charter industry.
The King Mackerel finally showed up and we caught five of them while high speed trolling with deep diving skirted lures at 10 knots. Four of them were around 10 to 12 pounds and one was over 20. Either way, our customers sure enjoyed tugging on some larger fish. We have not caught any Kings on our drift lines so far this year. We should start catching them soon. The large artificial wrecks like the liberty ships usually produce a lot early in the season. I can’t wait until the Kings start hitting the ole drift line and start peeling the line off.
