Hi colmalone.
It's hard to tell without seeing the Reel,not knowing if it has been stored wet,been for a swim in fresh or salt water etc.
There could be a few problems with your reel,the main one,sounds like some line is jammed in behind the spool.
Try undoing the line tension nut on the front of the reel,to remove the spool,(some reels,mainly the rear drag types have a button to press also),& hopefully you can find the problem.
Other problems could be:
Seized Reel,Spool seized onto shaft,etc.
