Mike; Try DROP-SHOT TECHNIQUE
One of the quickest ways to get on any freshwater fish species is try your hand at drop-shotting technique. You can use any line weight, just match it to the water conditions, size of fish and the cover you will be fishing in. If you are fishing for Bluegills and Crappie around boatdocks where snags are not a problem you will want very light line. Yet at the same time if big bass is your target in heavy cover, get yourself a Medium Heavy Rod, 17 to 20 lb. line. Use a weedless style Texas Rigging. This will keep your hook from getting snagged. Now let`s get started. Tie a small straight shank hook onto your line with a palomar knot, leave yourself a couple feet leader under hook. You can adjust this length from one to two feet. Get some Drop-Shot lead weights and slide one on your line. You have several baits to choose from, live bait or plastic. We use only plastic baits like Crickets or Worms for Panfish. Nose hook your bait, put the hook point back into the bait. This will keep it weedless, but if there are no problems will snags just leave the hook point exposed. You can also hook your baits in center, this is called Wacky Style. This give you a different action on the fall and also after it reaches bottom. Now you are ready to make your first cast, you can do this overhand or just pitch it out. Let you sinking bait free fall, allowing it to touch bottom. Now with the lightest touch pick up on the rod tip so you weigh the sinker, if you feel a mushy weight. Set the hook because a fish has grabbed your bait on the fall. Now if you don`t feel any extra weight, just shake you rod tip or squeeze the handle real hard this will make your rod tip quiver. This is all the action you need to draw strikes. No strikes, cast to a different area or change the bait either color or style. I hope this helps your fishing. Maddoglures
