I live on a rather small lake that is stocked annually with 2,500 to 3,000 splake. The lake is not fished heavily except for loons, osprey, mink, and otters. I don't know anyone who has success catching splake...for that matter even finding splake during the summer. A few are caught in the spring up in shallow water and a few more in the fall. Splake fishing here is mainly a winter sport...using tip ups and live minnows. PLEASE HELP ME...HOW DO YOU CATCH SPLAKE IN THE SUMMER?

I heard spake keeps itself very deep in the water in summer and I heard that could be as much as 35 feet. People that say this are using weights to help their baits down. You could use a small mustad hook tipped with a tail half of a minnow and a split shot eight inches.

Recently ran into an old and very well known trout fisherman. He told me he catches splake regularly by taking Christmas tree tinsel..aluminum foil...and attaching it to his line using split shots. He then bottom bounces this with a live minnow.

Try using a 4 to 6 weight fly rod with a sinking line and fast sink leader and try a variety of wet flies... Muddler Minnow, Mickey Finn, Nymph, epoxy minnows. You will have success.

use smelt tails and bounce them off the bottom while either drifting or slowing trolling....promise this will work!
