Hello All,

I am new to the forum and my passion and profession is meteorology. I have always enjoyed fishing but I have never been able to get into as much as I would like. I hope to change that in the years to come.

However, I have friends who do take it seriously, and even participate in competitions, and I know that weather is a big factor in a successful fishing trip. I am curious though as to what is considered "good" fishing weather, and what is generally a bad weather pattern for fishing.

In return, feel free to send along any weather questions you might have and if you have a love for weather, you can check out my website and weather blog at: www.skyeyeweather.com

Have a great weekend!

Thanks Danube!

I have been on a lake as thunderstorms approached, and it can get scary. However, I have always heard that during unsettled weather, the fishing is better vs a clear day. True?

I have heard they hold up in schools (groups) if it's stormy weather. Don't know about a lake though. At sea at least this seems to be the case. And, not too much catching is going on then somehow.

hi i don't think its the weather that makes a fishing trip good or bad you just have to do different things in different weather like if its sunny use one type and color of lure and if its cloudy use a different color and type lure i have got fish in all weather from sunny to raining so its not as much the weather as much as what you do in it well that's what i think anyway so just go out and test different things and see what's working on that day

Thanks...

I didn't think that the weather (assuming it's not severe) would prevent a serious angler from heading out and making the most of it. As in any sport, there is different equipment for different venues and different weather conditions.

Is there an "ideal" type of weather for fishing?

Well, I read fishing reports here on this site that did say the wind did a present a factor in catching fish. I will have to perform a 'search' on this site to find it. Probably will be back later with a link orso.

There's no easy answerer because it depends a lot on the type of water, clear or stained and the species of fish.

Walleye for example, you'd want an overcast day with some wind to churn up the water.

What do you like to fish for and where?

Actually, I don't get to fish much, but as a meteorologist, and someone who talks to a lot of anglers, I like to know what they prefer so I don't call a certain day "great fishing weather" when it's really not.

Hopefully I can find the time to take my 3 boys out fishing this year...

Thanks Rose

How old are you boys? Book a trip to Canada and experience the great outdoors. It's such a beautiful place.

They're 18, 12 and 7...we would love that.

I am building a new business, so this is probably not the year for traveling...and my oldest is heading to Florida for college, so I may need to look at fishing down south.

WxLuvr, there seem to be more reports, but for instance the following is mentioning storm in it and have a look to see how that influenced the fishing that week of that captain please

Now that sounds nice. Here in the Midwest (Ohio Valley) we just had a day of highs in the teens, wind chills below zero, light snow and blowing snow...fun! Not good for golf, fishing (maybe ice fishing) or any other outdoor fun. I love winter, but 70s and sunny sounds pretty good right now.

PS Danube, I recieved your message, but got a bounce back when I tried to reply. I'll be putting something on my forum about this one in the next few days...

Okay, I put a post in our "Sports" sub-forum to let everyone there know about this site. I hope it brings more visitors here. They're all weather geeks (FYI), but we have some serious anglers there as well...and let's face it, fishing and weather go hand-in-hand...

The forum is at www.skyeyeweather.com/Weather_Forum

Thank you very much, sir I saw it. I also asked captain Charlie on this forum just now and I'm sure he will be able to give a reliable answer to this question directly taken from his (rich) experience
