Hi ole Welcome.
Even though I haven't been on any of the Great Lakes,I have been and fished on many Rivers,Lakes both Salt and Freshwater,as well as the Pacific Ocean,The Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea on all types of Boats, from 12 ft punts,V Hulled Tinnies,16-20 ft Runnerbouts,as well as the Game and Charter Boats, over many years.
I have found the smaller boats,to be a pain as you are constantly hammered in the sloppy conditions, which is not only unpleasant, can become dangerous,so if you are going to build a boat, make sure it suits the conditions,as you read about it all the time where people are rescued, and others are not so fortunate, best way go out with someone set up/experienced for the Lakes.
