Hi kevin.
Welcome, hope this helps, carp are usually a bottom feeding fish,& will also take insects off the surface of the water.
I've caught them on Garden Worms&Yabbies,
whilst fishing for other species,& found a running sinker setup the best method to catch them,as they are good fun when caught on light line.
All you need to do is to thread a light sinker,(a lead weight just heavy enough so you can cast the line),onto the line & then tie on the hook, another method is to tie in a swivel or a piece of a very small wood about 2-2.5 ft from the hook to make the sinker run,& stay away from the hook.
You will also find you will also catch other fish species as well, when you are bait fishing.
In Australia they are caught commercially, under supervision of the Fisheries Departmentby being given an Electric shock, scooped out then taken & made into fertiliser for Gardens.
Good luck,hope you catch heaps.
