Hi I just got introduced to fishing last September. I am hooked on it. My question is this. What advice can you give a beginner who is looking to catch bass.

I've tried to figure it out on my own but the one bass I've caught is I think by accident. I knew a fish was there because my line went left when I was reeling in from straight in front.

I was using a rattling Jig with a swimming trailer, my rig (not a lot of money so I have one rod for now) is a Ugly Stik 7' medium action with a spinning reel and 8lb line. The problem is when I retrieve I feel the bottom but cannot tell the difference between a fish and the bottom.

I live in Nevada and I am fishing out at a cooling pond.

Thanks, for the welcome and the link to the other thread. I've read that post and I guess my question becomes, how do I tell the difference between a rocky bottom that bounces my line and a strike??

Thanks again for replying

Just set the hook when you think its a fish. no harm is done if its the bottom but is a lot of fun when its a fish. You get to know the feel when its a fish.

DONT GO TO THE STORE AND GO CRAZY AND BUY EVERY LURE YOU SEE. START OFF SIMPLE AND FIND A FEW THINGS THAT WORK FOR YOU AND PERFECT YOUR SKILL WITH IT. ONCE YOU HAVE SHARPENED YOUR SKILL AND DEVOLEPED YOUR TECHNIQUE WITH A BAIT THEN MOVE ON TO ANOTHER LURE ON DOWN THE LINE. IF YOU DONT YOU WILL SPEND A BUNCH OF MONEY ON LURES JUST WAISTING AWAY IN YOUR TACKLE BOX. WHEN I STARTED OUT I USED RUBBER WORMS. I LEARN TO FISH A TEXAS AND CAROLINA RIG. THEN I MOVED ON TO SPINNER BAITS. GOOD LUCK!

Id have to agree with swampdaddy, I recently moved in with my grandma and lucky for me she has a 6 acre pond in the back yard. I kept complaining there were no fish. My problem wasnt that there werent any fish. My problem was that the water was cold and the fish werent biting what i was putting out there.

Two weeks later after it warmed up to about 90 degrees i was catching fish and just happened to catch a 4lber that day.

As to lures my advice is try some rebel lures, the thing i love about rebel is that you can get them at any walmart and it tells you exactly how to use them on the box.

I recently started a special site for beginners to bass fishing. It contains all the basics you need along with videos. After eading a few topics and watching the videos you can return here and have a greater knowledge base to discuss a variety of topics. Tight lines, Steve
