Hey Guy's,
Another question for your forum!
Has anyone had problems with the anti-reverse needle / roller bearings found in Shimano reels?
I've found with very high loads these can sometimes fail, has only heard of Sprag Bearings? - They are used in engineering applications such as car clutches for automatic gear boxes, I was wondering if these were more suitable??
Thanks in advance for any feedback or previous experience you may have had?
Cheers,
Mark

Mark it seems like not many people have experienced that problem - I have looked on the internet for more about it but also cannot find a whole lot about it. Are you sure it is not a singular, individual problem your specific roller bearing is having?

Hi Mark,Had experience with these Anti Reverse bearings fitted with a sprag clutch on conveyor belts(larger scale) & they occasionally gave trouble.
Alot of reel makers fit them ,some of mine even have them.I really think after use & an occasional dunking in water, (especially if used in salt water)they too would fail,as some of the ball bearings are carbon steel case- hardened, hard nylon, the best being stainless steel,as water is No 1 enemy of a bearing,as it washes the lubricant away. Saw an add for these bearing, will try to chase it up,it's in the US somewhere.

Hi Mark.
Found the site where you can enquire about Shimano Bearings, look up,www.vxb.com.
It took a while to find,in my notes I have scribbled over the last year or so.
Hope you can fix the problem.

Hi Liphooked,
Many thanks for the bearing info, it's really interesting!! - I would like to buy a set of second hand reels, strip out the bearings and replace them with these ceramic ones and then put it through its paces!!
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark.
Surely Shimano must supply these bearings as spare parts,as they are not trouble free.
I bought a Scientific Anglers Fly Reel from a guide in Wyoming & he gave me some anti-reverse bearings to suit, which he said was readily available.
There should be spares around, somewhere, even if the reels are no longer made or sold.
Also it's a wonder they have not been made from ceramic,as I know certain parts for pumps in the Mining Industry are.

Hi Mark.
You wouldn't believe it,I was looking throgh a section on the internet,& there came ceramic bearings for all types of fishing reels on eBay, however you had better sit down to look at the prices,as one minature bearing they had was $68+.
The site is Boca Bearings, Ceramic Bearings very expensive,is your reel/s worth fixing????
