Can somebody please tell me where the water should be coming out, I believe that it is supposed to come out the 2 small holes on the back. Is that correct?

Hi Mr Bill.
The water is supposed to come out of the two holes ,like you say at the rear of the engine, you should see it coming out,if not you usually find the impellor in the Water Pump has gone hard, which causes it collapse.
I suggest you go to your local Library where they usually have the Manuals,as you have to remove the leg to replace it.
Friends of mine have a larger engine of the same Vintage & are replacing it as the Case-Hardening has worm/fretted off all the gears in the gearbox.
Hope yours is in better condition.
Good Luck.

thanks alot, I thought that was the case. I just rebuilt a 40hp that I had bought fom a man that claimed it to be a very dependable motor. I made it about 1/8 of a mile when the bottom end let go, I suppose I should have been skepticle when seen that it had a brand new prop on it and had never been run. I learned alot about the gears in a very short time
Already check with public library, hey had othing. Just wanted to be sure about the water in this 65hp before tearing into it, as I am doing for a friend. thanks again....

WRONG!!! the water on a 72 johnson 65 hp does not come out of those 2 side by side holes, it comes out the bottom of the motor, the holes on top are for exhaust.

the best way to test the water pump and impeller is to put the motor in the water at the launch, start it and let it idle a while, if you touch the cylinder head and its very hot, its probably not pumping properly.

Hi Sharky.
Welcome & thanks for pointing out my error.
Probably the best way would be to hook up a water hose to it,if possible which would give the same results as launching it.

Hooking it up to the water hose will give you a false answer. The hose pressure will force the water through the pump and cool the motor
