I assume you have a 12/24 volt motor and are not trying to make a 12 volt motor into a 12/24 motor...right? The 12/24 on my boat is controlled through a switch on the dash as far as charge/run and the 12/24 control is on my foot controller. It is accomplished through electronics in the trolling motor head with transistors and a circuit board. Is your question related to battery hookup?

Assuming you want to take two 12 volt batteries and get 24 volt current, you need to hook them up in parallel. In other words, the positive lead goes to the positive terminal on one battery and the negative lead goes to the negative terminal on the other battery. Then run a wire from the negative to the positive of the other battery and you're done.

The way to think about it is this. If I have a 6 volt flashlight, I insert two 3 volt batteries in parallel (both batteries facing the same way) to get the 6 volts. If I were to insert them in series (facing different directions) the light wouldn't work. However, if it did work, it would last twice as long!

Don't blame me if your boat blows up!

Oops. You're exactly right, Bill.

Like I said, don't blame me if your boat blows up! One TIer got it wrong and the other got it right. You must be an engineer!

The hookup is correct for a 24 volt supply but it is a series circuit. If you hook both neg. terminals together and the positive terminals together you have a parallel circuit. This hook up will give you 12 volts but will last longer. Why not just buy a 24 volt battery. Sorry but I couldn't overlook the error.

No problem. Wish I had been at home when I posted that so I could have just gone and looked at my boat! I always get parallel and series confused. In that case, I probably shouldn't have responded in the first place.

Oh well.
